A double-up wooden top is a manufacturing technique in which the core of the top is thinner than a thick, heavy solid wood top. To achieve this, the edges of the table top are glued in such a way that the material thickness is doubled, creating an almost identical high-quality appearance from the outside as a thick solid wood top, but this is only an optical illusion.
Two are better than one
The Big Table Studio manufactures the Double-Up table tops with a so-called mirrored gluing process. To do this, the top is first made larger and then cut to the desired length. The sections are then glued to the underside in opposite directions. As a result, the annual rings are mirrored on the front edge.
For greater stability, the doubled wooden slats are usually reinforced with metal brackets to prevent warping in width. In addition, an integrated tension fitting is mounted on the underside of the table top. This ensures that the table top does not bend.
